Little Cypress

The smallest net in the series is named after a wonderful little stream that flows into Nipigon Bay just east of Gurney on Highway 17. The smallest net of my series for those of you bush-crashing to those small streams holding “pan sized” specs.

Cypress Series at Cypress River

Cypress

The Cypress River, big brother to the “Little Cypress”, is a short distance west of Little Cypress. Accordingly, the overall net size is a step up in size. As with the Little Cypress this small net is designed for those small streams and rivers.

Jackpine

The Jackpine is a popular river just east of Kama Point on Lake Superior; especially during the steelhead run in the spring. This net, designed to carry on your back while wading in the river, has a larger hoop size (50-55″) to accommodate those larger steelhead.

Split Rock

The last two nets in the series are of course tied to the Nipigon River and its famous “Split Rock” rapids. Split Rock is an area of fast water on the upper Nipigon River about 30 km up the Cameron Falls Road and is one of the hot spots on “the Nipigon”. It is a large, long handled net for landing larger steelhead and specs.

Rabbit Rapids Series Fishing Nets

Rabbit Rapids

It has been over 110 years since the World Record Brook Trout was landed by Dr. Cook at Rabbit Rapids on the Nipigon River. The rapids was one of several key fishing spots that were lost with the construction of the Pine Portage dam in 1950. This series of nets lands between the Split Rock and Guide Special with an overall length of 62 inches, handle of 36” and a hoop circumference of 65”. It has become very popular.

Split Rock Guide Series at Split Rock Rapids

Split Rock Guide Special

Gord Ellis, one of the local fishing legends, came to me and wanted an even larger net to accommodate fishing from the larger boats that guides use on the river. Thus, the development of the “Guide Special”. It’s the largest net I make and stands just under 6′ in length.
